Greenville-Butler County Library

Getting Started

The first order of business is quite simple: get yourself a library card! This opens the doorways to your imagination, both in the library and online. You can apply for a library card at our Circulation Desk inside the library.

Resident Library Cards
A Greenville-Butler County Public Library Card allows you to check out books, music, DVDs, etc., and allows you use of the library’s Public Access Computers. You can also remotely access databases and download eBooks and audio books. Library Cards are available to all citizens living in Butler County.

Library Cards are also available to those who:

Apply for a free Library Card at the Circulation Desk by presenting a completed and signed Library Card Application Form in person. In addition, a valid/acceptable photo ID and proof of current mailing address in the name of the applicant will be requested and required.

Proper Identification
Any time something other than a current Alabama Identification Card or Driver’s License with current address is offered as proof of identity, a Photo ID will be required in combination with one proof of current residential address listed below.

Proof of Current Residence

In special circumstances library cards to individuals may be issued at the discretion of the Director.

Library Cards for Children
Children under the age of 16 registering for a Library Card must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or guardian who must sign the application card acknowledging responsibility for any lost or damaged materials and fines that may accumulate.

Non-Resident Library Cards
Non-Residents of Butler County may purchase Library Card privileges by paying a non-resident fee. The non-resident fee for individuals is $25 and $35 for families (four cards per family). A non-resident Library Card must be renewed annually on the anniversary date of its purchase.

Replacement Cards
The first Library Card is free. Replacement cards are $5. If a card is lost, patrons should notify the Library as soon as possible to prevent misuse.

Library Card Records Purge Policy
In an effort to maintain consistent and up-to-date records, the Greenville-Butler County Public Library will purge on a regular basis all library cards that have not been used within a five-year period. Records of patrons with outstanding fines or overdue materials will be kept on record.

As the Library uses various software and database applications for different services in the library (circulation, computer use, eBook downloads), a library card may be deleted accidentally when it has been utilized within that five-year period (for example: to check out eBooks). If you utilize your library card in such a manner and are unable to gain access, you simply need to apply for a new library card at the circulation desk and one will be issued to you free of charge.
